Not all tyres are built for the same conditions. The rubber compound and tread pattern are tuned for different temperatures and weather, which affects your grip, braking and safety. Here is what you need to know to pick the right tyre for UK roads.
Summer tyres
Summer tyres use a harder compound designed to perform best in warmer conditions, typically above 7°C. They offer excellent grip and short braking distances on both dry and wet roads in mild and hot weather, along with lower road noise and good fuel efficiency.
The trade-off is that in cold weather the compound hardens, reducing grip. They are a great choice for spring and summer, but less suited to a hard frost or snow.
Winter tyres
Winter tyres use a softer compound with more natural rubber and thousands of tiny grooves called sipes. These stay flexible in the cold and bite into snow and ice, dramatically improving grip and braking when temperatures drop below 7°C.
They are not just for snow — they outperform summer tyres on any cold, wet or icy road. The downside is faster wear in warm weather, so they are best swapped out for the summer months.
All-season tyres
All-season tyres are a compromise designed to cope reasonably well all year round without swapping twice a year. For the UK climate — mild but wet, with only occasional snow — they are an increasingly popular, practical choice for many drivers.
- No need to store a second set of tyres or swap seasonally
- Solid grip in the cold and wet typical of British winters
- Look for the 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake) symbol for genuine winter capability
- Not as specialised as a dedicated summer or winter tyre at the extremes
So which should you choose?
If you cover lots of miles and want the best performance in each season, dedicated summer and winter tyres are ideal. If you want simplicity and drive mostly in typical UK conditions, a quality all-season tyre is hard to beat.
