How to Tell When Your Tyres Need Replacing

Checking a car tyre tread depth with a 20 pence coin in the grooves

Your tyres are the only part of your car that actually touches the road, so keeping them in good condition is one of the most important things you can do for your safety. Worn tyres increase stopping distances, reduce grip in the wet and can land you with a hefty fine and penalty points. Here are the key signs it is time for a fresh set.

1. Your tread is getting low

The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. However, grip drops off well before that, so many experts recommend replacing tyres at around 3mm. A quick way to check at home is the 20p test.

Insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be below the legal limit and you should get the tyre checked straight away.

2. Cracks in the sidewall

Visible cracks or cuts in the sidewall are a sign the rubber is perishing or has been damaged. This weakens the tyre and increases the risk of a blowout, so a cracked tyre should be replaced without delay.

3. Bulges or blisters

A bulge or blister on the tyre usually means the internal structure has been damaged, often after hitting a pothole or kerb. This is a serious weak point that can fail suddenly. Do not drive on a bulging tyre — call us and we will replace it.

4. Uneven wear

If a tyre is wearing more on one edge than the other, or in patches, it can point to wheel alignment, suspension or inflation issues. Watch for these patterns:

  • Wear on both edges — often under-inflation
  • Wear in the centre — often over-inflation
  • Wear on one edge only — likely an alignment problem
  • Patchy or scalloped wear — possible suspension wear

5. Vibration or pulling

Excessive vibration through the steering wheel, or the car pulling to one side, can indicate an unbalanced wheel, alignment issue or a damaged tyre. Every tyre we fit is balanced on site to keep your ride smooth.

6. Age

Even with plenty of tread, tyres degrade over time. As a general guide, tyres over five years old should be inspected regularly and most should be replaced by ten years old, regardless of how they look.
