A good set of tyres is not cheap, so it pays to look after them. The way you drive and maintain your car has a huge effect on how long your tyres last. Follow these simple tips and you could add thousands of miles to every set.
Keep your pressures right
Correct tyre pressure is the single biggest factor in tyre life. Under-inflated tyres wear out quickly on the edges and waste fuel, while over-inflated tyres wear out in the middle. Check them at least once a month using the figures in your handbook or door sill.
Check your alignment
If your car pulls to one side or your tyres are wearing unevenly, your wheel alignment may be out — often after hitting a kerb or pothole. Poor alignment can wear a tyre out in a few thousand miles, so it is well worth getting checked.
Rotate your tyres
Front and rear tyres wear at different rates. Rotating them periodically — swapping front to back — helps them wear more evenly and last longer overall. Ask us about rotation next time we visit.
Drive smoothly
- Avoid harsh acceleration and heavy braking
- Take corners at a sensible speed
- Slow down for potholes, kerbs and speed bumps
- Do not carry more weight than you need to
Keep an eye on tread and condition
Inspect your tyres regularly for cuts, cracks, bulges and uneven wear. Catching a problem early — such as a slow puncture or an alignment issue — often means a cheap fix rather than a ruined tyre.
